NYSA Singles Players Guide
Everything you need to know about playing NYSA Singles — match format, rules and etiquette, scheduling, and how results get reported. For current seasons, deadlines, and eligibility, see the NYSA Singles page.
Match Format
Game Play: Matches are 16 frames, walking singles — you play from both the head and foot of the court, alternating after each frame. Colors switch after 8 frames, but the score is cumulative; it does not reset at the switch and continues for the full 16 frames.
Color Determination: Flip a coin — the winner chooses their starting color.
Practice Shots: 4 practice shots from the head and 4 from the foot with your starting color. After 8 frames, once you switch colors, you’ll get another 4 practice shots at the head and foot with your new color.
Color Order: Yellow, Black, Black, Yellow (repeated 4 times).
Tie Breaker: If the score is tied after 16 frames, stay on your current color and play 2 more frames (yellow first). If still tied, switch colors (returning to your starting color) and play 2 more frames (yellow first). Continue switching colors and repeating 2 frames at a time until the tie is broken — always starting with yellow.
Rules & Etiquette
All singles matches adhere to the NYSA Rules of Play. Here are some other key things to note specific to NYSA Singles Leagues:
Line Calls: Try to decide amongst yourselves if a disc is in or not. If it’s too close to call and you can’t agree, find another league player or ask a staff member to make a call for you — their determination is final.
Coaching: You’re playing as an individual, so there’s no outside coaching once a match has started.
Pre-Match Warm-Up: You may not warm up on the match court in advance. Each player only gets the designated practice shots before play begins.
Best practice: If you choose to warm up on a different court before the match, make sure another court will be available at the agreed-upon start time. It’s also a nice gesture to let your opponent know, in case they want to feel equally warm.
Multiple Games: If you schedule back-to-back matches, don’t play on the same court for both.
Best practice: If you’re playing multiple matches in one day, let your opponent know ahead of time — earlier matches may affect your start time, and your opponent may appreciate the chance to arrive early or schedule another match that day too.
Sportsmanship: We’re a community first. Celebrate great shots — yours and your opponent’s — but avoid celebrating your opponent’s mistakes. Help create the kind of competitive environment you’d want to play in.
Scheduling
It’s the responsibility of both players to coordinate the scheduling of their matches.
Scheduling expectations:
- Reach out early. Once groups or brackets are announced, don’t wait for your opponent to contact you — take the initiative and begin discussing availability as soon as possible.
- Avoid procrastination. Don’t wait until the deadline to schedule your match. Spread your matches out instead of trying to complete them all at the end.
- Offer multiple scheduling options. Flexible scheduling only works if both players are willing to be flexible — offer a variety of days and times rather than limiting yourself to one window.
- Communicate extended absences. If you’ll be unavailable for a long stretch during the match timeframe, let your opponents know as early as possible.
- Respond promptly. If an opponent reaches out, reply within a reasonable timeframe — even if you don’t yet know your availability.
- Communicate if plans change. If you need to reschedule, let your opponent know as soon as possible and work together to find another time.
Typical court availability at Royal Palms:
- Monday & Tuesday: After league (especially for players in the latest division)
- Wednesday & Thursday: 6:00–10:00 PM
- Friday: 6:00–8:00 PM
- Saturday: 12:00–3:00 PM
- Sunday: Anytime (late afternoon and early evening may have shorter waits than noon)
NYSA Singles operates around Royal Palms’ regular business hours. If private events are scheduled, court waits may be longer — weeknight parties often finish around 8:30 PM, when additional courts become available. Check the Royal Palms website before heading over, as hours can change due to private events, early openings, or special closures.
All matches must be completed by the published deadline for each phase. Matches not completed by the deadline may result in a double forfeit. For current season deadlines, see the NYSA Singles page.
Having difficulty contacting your opponent or making reasonable scheduling progress? Email [email protected] as early as possible — don’t wait until the deadline has passed.
Reporting Results
Match results are typically submitted by the winner using the form at shuff.club. Results are then entered into RecRec by a NYSA representative. Both players are encouraged to verify that the reported score is accurate once it’s posted.
